FRP Marker Post — Underground Utility Identification

Pultruded FRP marker posts are composite profiles typically specified for permanently marking underground utility corridors, buried high-voltage cable routes, and pipelines. In standard municipal and industrial environments, these fiberglass posts provide corrosion resistance and dielectric safety, maintaining legible route identification over extended service periods where total cost of ownership consistently outweighs initial material cost.

A pultruded utility marker post serves as an alternative to legacy steel or concrete indicators that degrade when exposed to acidic soils, chemical runoff, or de-icing salts. Containing zero metallic constituents, the composite structure is inherently non-conductive. Corrosion resistance is verified per ASTM D543.

Longitudinal flexural strength typically ranges between 180–280 MPa when tested in accordance with ASTM D790, with actual values depending on profile cross-section geometry and reinforcement architecture. The post generally tolerates incidental industrial impacts better than brittle concrete alternatives. Service temperatures typically range from −40 °C to 80 °C, depending on resin selection.

Long-term outdoor durability may be evaluated through accelerated weathering methods such as ASTM G154. Integrated UV stabilizers and through-color pigmentation help maintain visibility of identification markings over extended use. Low moisture absorption characteristics are commonly evaluated under ASTM D570.

Proven in Field

"An international utility infrastructure project deployed these pultruded composite markers across coastal acidic soils, completely eliminating the three-year replacement cycle previously caused by metallic corrosion."
